Install command

A command that adds software, dependencies, or tools to a system.

An install command is a system instruction used to add software, dependencies, or tools to a machine. Common examples include package-manager commands that download code, configure it, and make it available for later use. Because installation often requires network access and system-level permissions, the command can do more than copy files: it may execute scripts, pull in transitive dependencies, or change security settings.

In cyber security, install commands matter because they are a trusted path into an environment. Attackers abuse them by placing malicious packages, typosquatted names, or unsafe one-line instructions in documentation, build scripts, or prompts. Defenders reduce risk by limiting who can run installation steps, pinning versions, checking package provenance, reviewing commands before execution, and using sandboxed or least-privilege environments. In enterprise settings, even a simple install command should be treated like code because it can change the software supply chain.
