inotify

A Linux kernel mechanism for watching file and directory events.

inotify is a Linux kernel feature that lets programs watch files and directories for events such as create, delete, modify, rename, or attribute changes. Applications use it for tasks like syncing folders, refreshing indexes, and responding to edits in real time.

In cyber security, inotify matters because event streams can reveal more than file contents. An attacker who can observe watched directories may infer user activity from timing and patterns, even without reading protected data. For example, bursts of file events can hint at application use, script execution, or sensitive documents being opened and saved. Defenders also rely on inotify for monitoring and detection, but they should keep watcher scope narrow, protect sensitive paths, and avoid exposing broad parent directories. Used carefully, inotify is a useful telemetry source; used carelessly, it can become a metadata side channel.
