Infrastructure Mapping

The analysis of servers, domains, and related assets to infer operator behavior or organization.

Infrastructure mapping is the analysis of servers, domains, IPs, certificates, hosting patterns, and related assets to infer how an operator works and how their environment is organized. In cyber security, it helps analysts connect scattered technical clues into a broader picture of control, staging, phishing, relay, or command activity.

This matters because infrastructure is often visible before malware or a confirmed breach. A domain registration pattern, reused hosting, or shared network footprint can reveal coordination, persistence, or likely operator overlap. Defenders use this to build indicators of compromise, prioritize monitoring, and correlate logs with suspicious assets. The limitation is that infrastructure alone does not prove intent, victimization, or the exact role of an asset, so it must be validated with traffic, authentication data, and other evidence.
