Infrastructure incident

A security event affecting the systems that support a digital service.

An infrastructure incident is a security event that affects the systems supporting a digital service, such as servers, identity services, APIs, build pipelines, logging, or cloud control planes. It may disrupt availability, integrity, or monitoring without immediately proving a breach of user accounts or data.

In cyber security, this matters because service infrastructure often sits behind the application users see, and compromise there can undermine trust at scale. Attackers may target infrastructure to steal credentials, plant malicious updates, redirect traffic, or disable defenses. Defenders treat these events seriously because even a partial outage can hide deeper compromise. Response usually includes isolating affected systems, checking authentication and access logs, validating configurations and deployments, and confirming whether downstream services were touched. The term is broader than “breach”: it signals that the supporting environment is under security stress and needs investigation.
