Infrastructure hack

A practical modification or idea intended to improve how a physical system works.

An infrastructure hack is a practical modification or workaround that improves how a physical or operational system works without rebuilding it from scratch. In transport, utilities, or industrial systems, it often means using existing components in a smarter way to gain efficiency, resilience, or visibility. The idea is less about “hacking” in the criminal sense and more about an inventive change to the underlying system.

In cyber security, infrastructure hacks matter because attackers and defenders both depend on the same real-world infrastructure: networks, power, logistics, sensors, and control systems. Attackers may exploit small configuration changes, alternate routes, or weakly managed equipment to hide activity, persist longer, or disrupt operations. Defenders use infrastructure hacks too, such as segmentation, redundant paths, deception devices, and better monitoring, to reduce risk and improve response. The key lesson is that small changes to infrastructure can have outsized security impact.
