Industrial IoT refers to connected industrial devices and systems that collect, exchange, and act on operational data. It includes sensors, controllers, gateways, smart machinery, and edge platforms used in factories, utilities, logistics, and other OT environments. Unlike ordinary office IT, IIoT often supports physical processes, so downtime or tampering can affect safety, production, and service delivery.
IIoT matters in cyber security because every connected device adds a potential entry point. Attackers may target weak passwords, outdated firmware, exposed remote management, or insecure protocols to move from a low-value device into a broader industrial network. Defenders reduce this risk with asset inventory, network segmentation, secure boot, patch management, strong authentication, and monitoring for abnormal device behavior. In practice, IIoT security is about protecting both the data and the actions that data can trigger.
