Improper origin validation

A failure to confirm where a message or request truly came from.

Improper origin validation occurs when a system fails to reliably verify where a message or request came from before trusting or processing it. For example, an internal service might accept a message without checking that it was sent by an authorized component. The weakness is about trust and verification, not necessarily about stolen passwords.

In cyber security, this can let an attacker send forged or unauthorized requests to a vulnerable system. In a remote-support appliance, that may enable operations such as accessing or changing files, potentially affecting privileged workflows. Defenders should patch affected software, restrict network access to management interfaces, and review logs and file integrity for unexpected activity. Strong authentication and verification between components can also reduce the risk.
