Image sensor

The part of a camera that converts incoming light into a digital signal.

An image sensor is the light-sensitive component inside a camera that turns incoming light into a digital signal. In practical terms, it is the part that captures the scene before software, compression, or storage gets involved. Common sensor types include CCD and CMOS, and they are found in cameras, phones, laptops, and many IoT devices.

In cybersecurity, image sensors matter because they sit at the boundary between the physical world and digital systems. Attackers may target the firmware, drivers, or supporting electronics around a sensor to disable recording, corrupt images, or hide activity. Defenders care about sensor integrity in surveillance, access control, and industrial systems, where trustworthy visual evidence can be important. A damaged or tampered sensor can produce black frames, noise, false images, or misleading output, so checking the sensor path is a key part of incident response and hardware repair.
