IKEEXT

The Windows service component that implements Internet Key Exchange extensions for IPsec setup.

IKEEXT is the Windows Internet Key Exchange Extensions service. It supports IKE and IKEv2, the protocol used to negotiate security associations and keys for IPsec connections. In practice, IKEEXT helps Windows establish protected tunnels for VPNs, DirectAccess, Always On VPN, and other IPsec-based network access controls.

It matters because it often runs at the network edge, where unauthenticated peers can reach the handshake code before normal user authentication happens. Vulnerabilities in IKEEXT can therefore expose systems that answer inbound IKE/IPsec traffic to pre-auth remote attack, including memory corruption bugs such as double free conditions. Defenders should identify which hosts actually respond to IKE, limit unnecessary exposure on UDP 500 and related IPsec paths, and patch responders quickly. Monitoring for negotiation anomalies, crashes, or unexpected service restarts can also help spot probing or exploitation attempts.
