IDS

A system that monitors traffic and events for signs of suspicious activity.

An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) monitors network traffic, host activity, or logs for signs of suspicious behavior. It does not usually block traffic by itself; instead, it generates alerts or records evidence so defenders can investigate. IDS tools may look for known attack patterns, unusual protocol use, policy violations, or behavior that differs from normal activity.

IDS matters because many attacks are first visible as small signals: scanning, credential abuse, lateral movement, or command-and-control traffic. In real operations, an IDS helps security teams detect these stages early, preserve forensic detail, and confirm whether an alert is worth escalation. It is also useful for compliance and threat hunting. The main challenge is tuning: too many false positives can hide real threats, while weak detection rules can miss them. For that reason, IDS is most effective when paired with good logging, response procedures, and analysts who can interpret the alerts.
