Identity visibility is the near real-time ability to see which users, service accounts, roles, credentials, and permissions exist in an environment, and how they relate to one another. In cloud and multicloud systems, identities spread across directories, consoles, and SaaS services, so manual inventories quickly become stale. Good visibility lets defenders spot excessive privileges, dormant accounts, broken trust relationships, and authorization drift before they become security gaps.
In cyber security, identity visibility matters because many attacks begin with valid credentials rather than malware or exploits. If a stolen password, token, or old service account is still active, an attacker can blend into normal activity. Defenders use identity visibility to support zero trust, enforce least privilege, review access continuously, and link authentication events to policy decisions. Without it, teams are forced to guess who should have access after the damage is already done.
