Identity records are personal documents and data elements that establish who a person is, such as government IDs, Social Security numbers, driver’s license details, passports, or HR records that contain the same information. In cyber security, these records are high-value because they can be reused to impersonate victims, open fraudulent accounts, bypass verification checks, or support social engineering.
Attackers often steal identity records from file servers, email systems, document portals, or poorly protected backups, then sell or leak them to increase pressure on a victim. Defenders reduce risk by limiting collection, segmenting access, encrypting sensitive files, and monitoring for unusual downloads or exposed archives. If identity records are suspected in a breach, fast validation and targeted notification matter because the harm can include fraud, account takeover, and long-term privacy abuse.
