Identity network

A system of digital credentials and access rules that helps define who can use a service.

An identity network is the set of digital credentials, trust relationships, and access rules that determines who can authenticate to a service and what they are allowed to do. It can include usernames, certificates, tokens, roles, federation links, and policy engines that validate identity across systems.

In cyber security, the identity network matters because identities are often the real control plane. If attackers steal credentials, tokens, or session cookies, they can bypass perimeter defenses, impersonate users, escalate privileges, and move through connected services. Defenders use identity networks to apply multi-factor authentication, least privilege, device checks, logging, and fast revocation. In distributed environments such as local data centers or civic platforms, a well-designed identity network helps services interoperate without opening access too widely.
