Identity-layer access control is a way of tying every action to a specific digital identity and the exact scope assigned to it. Instead of treating a tool, bot, or agent as a generic process, the security system checks who it is, what it may access, and which operations are permitted before the action runs.
This matters because visibility alone does not prevent misuse. In attacks, a prompt injection, stolen token, or misrouted workflow can push an AI agent to call APIs, read sensitive data, or trigger privileged automation. Identity-layer controls limit the blast radius by enforcing least privilege, separating read access from execution rights, and requiring approval for high-impact actions. Defenders use it to ensure that even if an agent is manipulated, its permissions remain bounded and auditable.
