Identity integration

The process of merging login, access, and authentication controls across environments.

Identity integration is the process of merging login, access, and authentication controls across different environments, such as cloud services, on-premises systems, partner platforms, or newly acquired business units. It typically involves connecting identity providers, synchronizing user accounts, standardizing multifactor authentication, and aligning roles, permissions, and audit logs.

In cyber security, identity integration matters because identity is often the main control plane for access. If it is rushed or inconsistent, users may keep stale privileges, shared accounts may survive longer than they should, and security teams may lose visibility into who can reach sensitive systems. Attackers often exploit these gaps through password spraying, account takeover, or abused trust relationships after two environments are joined. Defenders use careful identity integration to enforce least privilege, separate admin roles, require strong authentication, and review access as systems are consolidated. In healthcare and other regulated sectors, this is especially important because integration can widen the attack surface before governance catches up.
