An identity credential is a token used to confirm a person’s claimed identity, such as a badge, pass, card, or other visible proof of access. In security, credentials matter because they help people and systems decide who should be trusted, admitted, or challenged. They are often simple on purpose: easy to present, easy to inspect, and easy to carry.
In cyber security, identity credentials can be valuable targets because they reveal names, roles, affiliations, or access levels. Attackers may copy, steal, photograph, or exploit them during reconnaissance and impersonation attempts, then use that information for phishing, social engineering, or physical entry. Defenders reduce risk by limiting exposed details, verifying credentials carefully, and treating badges and passes as sensitive data-bearing items rather than harmless accessories.
