Identity-aware access

Access decisions based on verified user or service identity, not network location alone.

Identity-aware access is a control model that grants or denies access based on a verified user or service identity, plus policy context, rather than on network location alone. Instead of trusting anything “inside” the network, the system checks who or what is requesting access, whether the identity is authenticated, and whether it is allowed to use that resource at that moment.

This matters because cloud apps, APIs, and microservices are reachable from many places, and attackers often exploit stolen credentials, exposed tokens, or overprivileged service accounts. Identity-aware access helps limit that risk with strong authentication, least privilege, device or workload checks, and continuous policy enforcement. Defenders use it to reduce lateral movement, stop unauthorized API calls, and make access decisions consistent across distributed environments. In practice, it is a core part of zero trust and modern cloud security.
