Hypothesis space

The full set of possible explanations, molecules, or targets that a research model can explore.

In cyber security, a hypothesis space is the full set of plausible explanations, attacker paths, malware variants, or targets that an analyst or model can consider. It is the search area used to rank what might be happening before there is enough evidence to confirm one answer. A hypothesis space that is too narrow can miss stealthy threats; one that is too broad can waste time and resources.

This matters in detection, threat hunting, and incident response. Security tools use features from logs, network traffic, and endpoint data to narrow the space and prioritize the most likely hypotheses. Attackers try to widen or obscure it by changing payloads, rotating infrastructure, or using evasive behavior so defenders cannot easily tell which family, technique, or target is involved. Good defense reduces uncertainty by testing the most informative clues first.
