Hexagonal grid

A geometric layout pattern that can be used to organize routing decisions on a board.

A hexagonal grid is a layout scheme that divides space into repeating hexagon-shaped cells instead of the more common square cells. In PCB routing, an autorouter can use this pattern to evaluate possible trace directions and spacing in a more flexible way than a rectangular grid.

This matters in cyber security because hardware security depends on trustworthy board design. Routing choices affect signal integrity, clearance, and manufacturability, all of which can influence whether a device behaves as intended or becomes easier to fault, probe, or misread. Hexagonal grids may help routing software explore options more evenly, but they do not replace rule checking, review, or verification. In practice, they are one geometric tool among many used to support safer and more reliable hardware layouts.
