Harmonised standards

Technical standards that help turn legal requirements into measurable compliance practices.

Harmonised standards are technical specifications recognized by regulators as a practical way to meet legal requirements. In the EU, they translate broad obligations into measurable controls, tests, and documentation that engineers can implement and auditors can verify. For AI and cyber security, that often means defined requirements for logging, access control, robustness testing, incident handling, and record keeping.

They matter because they reduce ambiguity. A security team can use a harmonised standard to decide what “secure by design” or “adequate oversight” should look like in a real system, then collect evidence for conformity. In attacks, vague compliance targets create weak spots: defenders may miss required hardening or monitoring because the duty is not operationalized. In defense, harmonised standards help turn policy into checklists, test plans, and release gates, making security and compliance easier to prove and maintain.
