Hardware requirement

a physical component needed before a project can be used.

A hardware requirement is a physical component or device that must be present before a project, tool, or workflow can be used. In cybersecurity, this can mean a security key, a compatible chip, a specific cable, or a supported reader. Without the required hardware, the software may not function at all, or it may lose important security features.

Hardware requirements matter because they shape both access and protection. For defenders, they can enforce strong authentication, isolate secrets in trusted devices, and reduce misuse by limiting who can run a tool. For attackers, hardware constraints can slow mass abuse, but they can also become targets for theft, cloning attempts, or social engineering around the device. In real deployments, a hardware requirement often appears in token-based login, encrypted storage, firmware tools, and device customization projects where compatibility and physical fit are part of the security story.
