Hardware constraints

physical limits such as memory, graphics, and processing capacity that shape what a device can do.

Hardware constraints are the physical limits of a device, such as available memory, CPU speed, storage, graphics capability, and power budget. These limits define what software can realistically do and how much complexity a system can handle. On a weak or legacy platform, even basic tasks may need to be simplified, compressed, or removed entirely.

In cyber security, hardware constraints matter because they shape both attack surface and defense options. Attackers often exploit them through resource exhaustion, forcing a device to run out of memory, processing time, or battery. Defenders must also design around them when building secure firmware, embedded systems, and IoT devices, where strong encryption, logging, or monitoring may be too expensive unless carefully optimized. Understanding these limits helps engineers make safer tradeoffs and avoid designs that fail under load.
