Hardware-backed security

Protection features anchored in dedicated device components that help isolate sensitive operations.

Hardware-backed security means sensitive operations are protected by dedicated device components such as secure elements, trusted execution environments, or security chips, rather than relying only on the main operating system. These components can isolate keys, enforce permissions, and perform cryptographic tasks in a more controlled environment.

It matters because attackers often try to steal credentials, bypass biometric checks, or tamper with encryption keys. If those secrets stay inside hardware-backed storage, a software compromise is less likely to expose them. In real attacks, adversaries may still target the software around the hardware, such as the browser, kernel, or radio stack, to reach privileged functions. On the defensive side, hardware-backed security supports device unlock, payment authentication, code signing, and secure updates, helping limit damage even when other layers fail.
