Haptic sensing

Technology that turns touch or pressure into data a system can process.

Haptic sensing is technology that converts touch, pressure, vibration, or force into data a system can process. In robotics, it lets a machine “feel” contact through tactile skins, sensors, or pressure arrays, turning physical interaction into a control signal. That makes touch part of the trust boundary: the system now depends on the integrity of the surface and the quality of the measurements it produces.

This matters in cyber security because sensor data can be wrong, noisy, or deliberately manipulated. Wear, poor calibration, environmental interference, or physical tampering can distort readings and change how a robot reacts. In an attack, an exposed tactile sensor might be flooded with pressure or vibration to trigger false responses; in defense, designers use calibration checks, filtering, sensor redundancy, and tamper-resistant materials to reduce risk. Haptic sensing is useful, but only when the input path is reliable.
