Graphics stack

The set of OS components, drivers, and APIs that handle display and rendering.

The graphics stack is the collection of operating system components, device drivers, and APIs that controls how a system draws to the screen. It includes the path from applications to the compositor, display driver, kernel interfaces, and GPU hardware. In Windows and other desktop systems, this stack handles rendering, window updates, video acceleration, and full-screen graphics used by games and interactive tools.

It matters in cyber security because the graphics stack is complex, privileged, and widely exposed to untrusted input from applications and media content. Bugs in this area can cause crashes, freezes, or degraded performance, but they can also create attack surface in drivers and GPU-related code. Defenders watch it for stability regressions after patching, since updates may affect rendering paths or hardware compatibility. In practice, many operational incidents involving “gaming problems” or random restarts are traced to driver issues or mismatches somewhere in the graphics stack rather than to malware.
