Governed workflows are approval and change processes that record who requested work, who approved it, what changed, and when it happened. In cyber security, they turn operational activity into an auditable trail, so teams can verify that a change followed policy instead of being made ad hoc. They are especially important in OT and other sensitive environments where untracked changes can affect safety, uptime, or compliance.
In practice, governed workflows connect ticketing, asset data, and evidence collection so defenders can trace maintenance, configuration edits, and access decisions end to end. Strong workflows help prevent unauthorized changes, support incident investigations, and reduce fraud or insider abuse. Weak workflows, by contrast, leave gaps that attackers can exploit by hiding malicious edits inside normal maintenance windows or by abusing overly broad approval rights. Good governance does not stop attacks by itself, but it makes suspicious changes easier to detect, prove, and roll back.
