Governance stack

the approvals, policies, reviews, and controls that shape how technology is adopted inside an organization.

A governance stack is the set of approvals, policies, reviews, and technical controls that determines how new technology is adopted inside an organization. In cybersecurity, it typically includes vendor risk checks, data-handling rules, change management, access approvals, logging, and exception workflows. The goal is to let teams use new tools quickly without creating blind spots.

This matters because attackers often exploit weak governance rather than strong code. If employees can install unsanctioned SaaS, connect unreviewed integrations, or grant broad permissions without oversight, malware, data loss, and account takeover become easier. A strong governance stack helps defenders enforce least privilege, block risky deployments, review AI and cloud tools before use, and keep audit trails for incident response. Done well, it reduces shadow IT and makes security a built-in part of technology adoption, not a last-minute veto.
