GodPotato

A Windows privilege-escalation tool that targets impersonation rights to reach SYSTEM.

GodPotato is a Windows privilege-escalation tool used to obtain NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM from a lower-privileged account. It targets impersonation-based escalation paths, typically by abusing a process token or a service configuration that allows a user to act with higher privileges than intended. In practical terms, it helps an attacker turn an initial foothold into full local control.

This matters because SYSTEM is the highest local security context on many Windows hosts. A process running as SYSTEM can often access protected files, manage services, dump credentials, and disable defenses that block normal users. Defenders encounter GodPotato-style abuse in post-exploitation activity, especially where SeImpersonatePrivilege is present, services are misconfigured, or exposed systems give attackers time to chain reconnaissance, credential theft, and escalation. Hardening includes removing unnecessary impersonation rights, limiting service permissions, and monitoring for unusual token use or rapid privilege changes.
