Global Administrator

The highest-privilege tenant role in Entra, with broad control over identity settings.

A Global Administrator is the highest-privilege tenant role in Microsoft Entra. It can control core identity settings, including users, groups, application registrations, authentication methods, consent, and many security policies. Because it sits at the top of the administration hierarchy, it can often override or reshape protections that other roles cannot.

In cyber security, this role matters because compromising a Global Administrator account can turn identity infrastructure against itself. An attacker with this access may create new privileged accounts, change MFA or password policies, register malicious applications, or alter trust settings to redirect authentication flows. Defenders should treat the role as highly sensitive: use least privilege, just-in-time elevation, strong MFA, separate admin accounts, and continuous auditing of role assignments and policy changes. In practice, the security of the tenant depends not only on logins, but on who can manage the login system.
