A gibibyte (GiB) is a unit of digital storage equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes, or 230 bytes. It is distinct from a gigabyte (GB), which is commonly defined as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems and technical tools often use GiB to report storage or data volume.
In cyber security, GiB can describe the size of a dataset, archive, disk image, or suspected data transfer. A reported volume can help defenders estimate scope and plan storage or investigation resources, but it does not prove that data was stolen or published. Confirm such claims against logs, file records, and other available evidence.
