Geolocation screening is a defensive check that compares a claimed location with evidence from network traffic, account activity, or device signals. Security teams use it to spot mismatches such as a user saying they are in one country while their login, IP address, time zone, or device telemetry suggests another.
This matters because location inconsistencies can reveal account takeover, remote-work fraud, proxy or VPN abuse, and concealed access relays. In attacks, an operator may try to make a login appear local by routing through another device or network. In defense, geolocation screening is one signal among many: it works best alongside identity verification, device trust checks, and behavior analysis. It does not prove wrongdoing on its own, but it helps flag risky sessions for extra review before access is granted or payments, onboarding, or sensitive actions continue.
