GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of making content more likely to appear in answers produced by generative AI systems. Unlike classic search optimization, GEO focuses on how AI tools retrieve, summarize, and cite material when users ask questions in natural language. The goal is not only visibility, but being represented accurately and consistently.
In cybersecurity, GEO matters because AI answer engines can become a new discovery layer for vendors, products, and security guidance. If legitimate pages are hard to parse, outdated, or poorly structured, attackers can benefit by pushing copied, misleading, or imposter content that looks more authoritative to an AI system. Defenders use GEO-style practices such as clear page structure, canonical sources, accurate metadata, and strong authorship signals to help trusted content surface. The same habits also reduce confusion in phishing defense, brand protection, and incident-response documentation.
