Generational turnover

the replacement of older staff with newer workers over time.

Generational turnover is the gradual replacement of older staff with newer workers over time. In cyber security, it matters because security knowledge, access habits, and operational memory often live in people, not just documents. When experienced employees leave, organizations can lose context about legacy systems, shared passwords, undocumented workflows, and the reasons behind old security controls.

Attackers can exploit this transition. New staff may be easier to phish, onboarding may grant excessive access, and offboarding gaps can leave stale accounts active. In defenses, generational turnover is managed by strong knowledge transfer, up-to-date asset documentation, least-privilege access, account reviews, and secure onboarding and offboarding. The goal is to prevent a workforce change from becoming a security blind spot.
