A gateway component sits between users or client applications and backend services. It receives requests, checks identity or session state, applies trust rules, and then forwards approved traffic to the right internal system. In many enterprise products, the gateway is part of the control plane, so it can shape who can reach administrative features, device-management functions, or authentication workflows.
This matters because a weakness in the gateway can undermine the security of everything behind it. Attackers may target it with authentication bypasses, request smuggling, or code-execution bugs to reach privileged functions without valid access. Defenders treat gateway software as high-value infrastructure: they patch it quickly, restrict exposure, monitor logs for unusual login or admin activity, and verify that trust decisions are enforced consistently at the boundary.
