Gap-analysis document

an assessment file that can reveal security or process weaknesses.

A gap-analysis document is an assessment file that compares current controls, processes, or systems against a desired security or compliance standard. It identifies missing safeguards, weak procedures, and areas where risk remains unmanaged. In cybersecurity, these documents are useful for planning remediation, prioritizing fixes, and showing where defenses do not yet meet policy or regulatory expectations.

Gap-analysis documents matter because they can expose an organization’s security posture in detail. If stolen in an extortion case, they may reveal known weaknesses, delayed upgrades, or internal assumptions about risk. Defenders also use them to track remediation progress after audits, penetration tests, or incident reviews. In attacks, criminals may seek them to understand where to pressure a target; in defense, teams treat them as sensitive internal material and restrict access, encrypt storage, and monitor for unauthorized disclosure.
