Frequency tuning is the process of setting or changing a radio’s operating frequency within a supported range. In software-defined radio (SDR), software may control this setting, allowing compatible hardware to operate on different frequencies instead of being limited to a single fixed channel.
In cybersecurity, tuning matters because changing a radio’s operating point can expand how wireless hardware is used, including beyond its expected purpose. During attacks or security testing, a device might be retuned to observe or transmit signals on other frequencies, if its hardware, firmware, and drivers permit it. Defenders should verify which frequencies devices can access and how firmware and configuration controls enforce those limits. Tuning capability alone does not prove that a device can communicate reliably or that its use is unauthorized.
