FreeIPA

An identity management system used to centralize authentication and access control in Linux domains.

FreeIPA is an identity management platform for Linux domains. It centralizes authentication, host enrollment, user and group management, Kerberos ticketing, DNS, and policy enforcement so administrators can control access from one place instead of configuring each server separately. In practice, it acts as the trust layer for a domain: if FreeIPA says an account, host, or group is valid, other services may accept that decision.

Because it sits at the boundary between identity data and authorization, FreeIPA is a high-value target. Attackers look for flaws in LDAP permissions, Kerberos identity handling, or self-service enrollment paths that let an unauthenticated client create or alter trusted identities. A mistake in this logic can turn a normal directory request into privileged group membership or account control. Defenders should patch the full stack, limit anonymous directory exposure, audit group membership changes, and monitor for unexpected principal or admin-group modifications.
