Flow tooling

tools built around summarized traffic records for monitoring and troubleshooting.

Flow tooling is network monitoring software built around summarized traffic records, such as NetFlow, sFlow, or IPFIX. Instead of storing full packets, it records metadata like source and destination addresses, ports, bytes transferred, timing, and protocol. That makes it lighter to collect and easier to search at scale.

In cyber security, flow data is valuable because it shows who talked to whom, for how long, and how much data moved, even when payloads are encrypted. Defenders use flow tooling to establish baselines, spot unusual connections, trace lateral movement, and investigate possible exfiltration or command-and-control traffic. NetOps teams also rely on it for troubleshooting congestion, routing issues, and performance problems. Because it summarizes rather than captures content, flow tooling is fast and efficient, but it can miss packet-level detail needed for deep forensic analysis.
