Flight envelope

the range of conditions in which a vehicle is designed to operate safely.

A flight envelope is the full range of speed, altitude, attitude, load, temperature, and other conditions in which a vehicle can operate safely. Engineers define it during design and testing so they know the limits beyond which control becomes unreliable, structure can fail, or sensors can no longer be trusted. In aviation and space systems, staying inside the envelope is a basic safety requirement, not just a performance target.

In cyber security, the idea matters most for cyber-physical systems such as drones, aircraft, robots, and industrial control platforms. Attackers may try to push a system outside its flight envelope by spoofing sensor data, corrupting firmware, changing setpoints, or forcing unsafe commands. Defenders reduce this risk with authenticated telemetry, watchdogs, rate limits, geofencing, and fail-safe modes that clamp behavior to safe boundaries. Security testing also uses envelope thinking: fuzzing, simulation, and boundary testing look for conditions where software or control logic breaks before a real attacker can exploit them.
