Flash chip

Nonvolatile memory that keeps data after power is removed, often used for firmware storage.

A flash chip is nonvolatile memory, meaning it keeps data when power is removed. In embedded devices, it often stores firmware, boot code, configuration, and sometimes sensitive credentials or calibration data. Because the device relies on this memory during startup, the flash chip is a key part of the system’s trust chain.

In cyber security, flash chips matter because physical access can expose or alter what the device will run before the operating system loads. Attackers may read a chip in place over interfaces such as SPI to dump firmware for reverse engineering, or write modified contents if protections are weak. Defenders reduce this risk with secure boot, authenticated updates, hardware write protection, locked debug ports, and careful board design that limits easy access to the memory path.
