First layer

The initial printed layer, which often determines whether the rest of the job succeeds.

The first layer is the initial printed layer in a 3D job, but the term is also useful in cyber security as a way to think about the first point where a process becomes real and testable. If that starting layer is uneven, contaminated, or poorly tuned, the whole build may fail later. In security, the same idea applies to initial trust decisions, startup checks, and baseline controls: if the first step is wrong, later protections have less value.

Why it matters is simple: attackers often target the earliest stage of a system, before logging, validation, or monitoring fully takes effect. Defenders try to harden that layer with strict input checking, clean defaults, repeatable configuration, and verification before execution or deployment. Whether it is a print bed or a security stack, the first layer is where reliability begins, and where small mistakes can multiply into larger failures.
