Financial tracing

Following money movements to identify where illicit funds came from and where they went.

Financial tracing is the process of following money movements to identify where illicit funds came from, how they were transferred, and who ultimately received them. Investigators look at bank records, payment processors, crypto wallets, money mules, and cross-border transfers to build a timeline of value moving through a criminal network.

In cyber security, financial tracing matters because many scams, ransomware operations, and fraud rings are built to hide profit, not just to steal data. Attackers often split payments across accounts, use intermediaries, or rotate payment routes to make the trail harder to follow. Defenders and law enforcement use tracing to connect fake accounts, infrastructure, and people behind the operation, seize assets, and support arrests. It is especially useful when digital evidence alone does not show the full structure of a transnational fraud or exploitation network.
