False base station

A rogue cellular transmitter designed to mimic legitimate mobile network equipment.

A false base station is a rogue cellular transmitter that imitates a real mobile tower so nearby phones may connect to it. It can broadcast convincing network identifiers, lure devices away from legitimate infrastructure, and then observe, disrupt, or shape the connection process.

In cyber security, false base stations matter because they attack trust at the radio layer, before many app- or network-level protections apply. Attackers may use them for location tracking, traffic interception, denial of service, or forcing weaker connection modes. Defenders look for unusual signal patterns, enforce strong network authentication, harden device behavior against suspicious cell selection, and monitor for unauthorized cellular equipment. The core risk is simple: if a device trusts the wrong tower, the rest of the communication chain can be exposed.
