An extortion conspiracy is a coordinated criminal plan in which two or more people work together to pressure a target for money, access, or other value. In cyber security, the pressure often comes from stolen data, locked systems, or the threat of public disclosure. The conspiracy aspect matters because the crime is not only the final demand, but also the shared planning, division of roles, and joint use of stolen access or tools.
This term appears in cloud and ransomware cases where valid credentials, data theft, and covert access are used to increase leverage. Attackers may first compromise accounts, then exfiltrate records, monitor communications, or threaten disruption until payment is offered. Defenders reduce this risk by enforcing strong authentication, reviewing sign-ins for abuse, revoking suspicious access quickly, and preserving logs for investigation. In practice, extortion conspiracy shows how identity abuse can become a business risk, not just a technical breach.
