Extortion actors

Threat actors that use pressure or claims to force a response.

Extortion actors are threat groups or individuals that use pressure, fear, or public claims to force a target to respond. Their goal is often not just to prove access, but to create urgency: pay a ransom, disclose information, restore access, or issue a statement. The claim may be true, exaggerated, or entirely false, but it is designed to make the target react quickly.

In cyber security, extortion actors matter because the message itself can become part of the attack. They may send threatening emails, leak samples, hijack trusted channels such as apps or social media, or claim a breach to amplify confusion. Defenders should verify the claim, preserve evidence, and control official communications. Treating communication integrity as a security control helps reduce the impact of intimidation tactics and limits how far false or unverified claims can spread.
