External domains

Email systems outside an organization’s own mail environment.

External domains are email systems outside an organization’s own mail environment. In practice, they are the mail servers and identities that sit beyond your tenant or internal messaging platform, such as customer, vendor, or partner domains. Sending to or receiving from an external domain usually requires extra routing, policy checks, spam filtering, and authentication steps before a message is accepted and delivered.

This matters in cyber security because email is a primary channel for business operations and for attacks. Problems affecting external domains can look like a broad outage: messages queue, delivery slows, and users may see generic errors even when their own mailbox is healthy. Defenders watch external-domain traffic for phishing, spoofing, and unusual delivery failures, while attackers often exploit trust between organizations by impersonating outside contacts or using delayed mail to create confusion. Monitoring external mail paths helps distinguish a service issue from a breach and reduces the chance of risky workarounds.
