External attack surface management

A security practice focused on discovering and tracking internet-facing assets, services, and exposures.

External attack surface management (EASM) is the practice of discovering, inventorying, and continuously tracking all internet-facing assets an organization exposes, including domains, IP ranges, cloud services, APIs, SaaS tenants, and AI-connected systems. The goal is to know what is reachable from outside the network, who owns it, and whether it is configured securely.

EASM matters because attackers often find weaknesses in forgotten or newly deployed services before defenders do. Shadow IT, misconfigured storage, exposed admin panels, and stale DNS records can all expand the attack surface without notice. In defense, EASM supports continuous monitoring, exposure validation, and remediation prioritization by showing which assets are truly exposed and which paths are most likely to be abused. It is especially useful in fast-changing environments where cloud, API, and AI integrations can drift between formal security reviews.
