Expressiveness

How much behavior a language or tool can describe.

Expressiveness is how much behavior a language, format, or tool can describe. A low-expressiveness tool handles a narrow task, such as simple text matching. A highly expressive one can represent richer logic, branching, repetition, and even general computation in some cases. That is why a seemingly small feature set can hide surprising power.

In cyber security, expressiveness matters because attackers and defenders both rely on tools that process text and structure: regular expressions, rule engines, parsers, policy languages, and filter systems. More expressiveness can improve detection and flexibility, but it also increases complexity, audit burden, and the risk of unintended behavior. Dense patterns may be hard to review, and overly powerful rules can create performance problems or logic mistakes. The practical lesson is to treat expressive syntax like code: test it, constrain it, and understand exactly what it can do.
