Exposure status

Whether a system is reachable by potential attackers, especially from the internet.

Exposure status describes whether a system, service, or interface is reachable by a potential attacker, especially from the public internet. A host behind a firewall with no inbound access has low exposure; a web application, VPN gateway, or exposed API has higher exposure because it can be discovered and probed remotely.

In cyber security, exposure status matters because reachability often determines whether a weakness can be attacked at all. An unpatched flaw on an internet-facing service is far more urgent than the same flaw on an isolated internal system. Defenders use exposure status to prioritize remediation, apply compensating controls, and reduce attack surface by limiting open ports, tightening network access, and placing sensitive services behind authentication or segmentation. Attackers, meanwhile, scan for exposed systems first, then test them for known weaknesses and misconfigurations.
