Exploit attempt

An observed effort to abuse a vulnerability, not proof of success.

An exploit attempt is observed activity that tries to abuse a software or hardware vulnerability. It may include malformed requests, crafted payloads, or repeated probes aimed at a known weakness. By itself, it only shows intent or testing; it does not prove the attacker got in, executed code, or caused damage.

In cyber security, the distinction matters because defenders must respond to risk before compromise is confirmed. Exploit attempts often appear in logs, network sensors, or threat feeds when exposed services are scanned or targeted. Analysts use them to prioritize patching, block hostile sources, restrict internet-facing access, and check whether the same weakness was successfully used. A burst of exploit attempts can reveal that a flaw is being actively tested even when no breach is visible.
